William O. "Bill" Helfer, 91, of Staunton, Illinois, passed away at 1:45 PM on Monday, November 27, 2023 at his residence in Staunton, Illinois. He was born April 12, 1932 in Hillsboro, Illinois, the son of the late William J. & Venita (Cash) Helfer. He married Bobbie J. Hasty on June 22, 1957 in St. John's, Missouri & she survives.
Bill was a graduate of Hillsboro High School Class of 1951. Prior to being drafted into the service, he had secured a Basketball scholarship to St. Louis University in St. Louis, MO. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956 during the Korean War.
He was employed as a truck driver for many years. After retirement, he sold watermelon & cantaloupe.
Bill is survived by his wife - Bobbie J. Helfer of Staunton, IL; one son - Kenneth Helfer; four grandchildren - Michael Helfer, Kenneth Helfer, Destiny Pratt, & Shain Helfer; six great grandchildren - Aaleigha Helfer (Travis Wallace), Brooklynn Helfer, Ivy Butler, Landyn Helfer, Alanzo Pratt, & Paulie Pratt. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons - Kevin & Kelvin Helfer; one brother - Shiral Helfer; one sister - Vera Homa; many aunts, uncles, & cousins also preceded him in death.
Friends may call from 3 to 6 PM on Monday, December 4, 2023 at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton, IL. Funeral services will be held at 6 PM on Monday, December 4, 2023 at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton, with Brett Luster officiating. Interment will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO at a later date.
