Robert "Bob" Cargnoni Obituary

Robert (Bob) Leroy Cargnoni, age 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 in Staunton where he spent the last 15 months under the gentle care of the Heritage Manor staff.

He was born on July 24th, 1934 in Staunton to Sylvester and Josephine Cargnoni. He attended the South Public School (now RP Lumber) and Staunton High School. After two years at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he enlisted in the Army serving from 1954-1956. While stationed in Japan, he met Pat Toma and they were married on March 13, 1956. They returned to Champaign and started a family with the arrival of daughter Karen. After Bob attained his BS Accounting degree in 1958, they moved to Chicago where he worked as an accountant and they also welcomed son Bob to the fold. In 1963, it was back to Staunton where daughter Sharon completed the family.

Bob worked at McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) from 1963 until his retirement in 1991.  He never complained about the daily commute to St. Louis which constituted part of his 12-hour work day. He firmly believed in providing for his family and maintained a side accounting business to ensure he could pay for college costs and family vacations. Pride of ownership was important to him and he and Pat always took care of their home and tended to the yard and garden.

He was a devoted son and brother, caring for his mother Josephine and his sister Marie.

Pat was the love of his life and they enjoyed everything ranging from simple adventures like afternoon drives to grandchildren visits to their annual trips to Hawaii to visit the Toma clan. When Pat encountered serious health issues late in life, he never left her side.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marie, brother John and wife Pat.

He is survived by daughters Karen & Sharon; sons-in-law Larry & Jim; son Bob; daughter-in-law Corinne; grandchildren Jared, Katie (husband James), Sam, Mitchell, Nathan & Hallie and great-granddaughter Murphy.

The family would like to thank Dr. Rajneesh Jain, the staff at the Staunton Clinic and the caregivers at Heritage Manor. Memorial donations can be made to the Heritage Manor Activities Fund.
