Melvin S. Hefer, 88 of Staunton, Illinois passed away Sunday, May 27, 2018 at Heritage Health in Staunton. Born March 21, 1930 in Staunton, Illinois, he was a son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Sam & Ida (Gruner) Hefer. He married Margaret “Peggy” Binney on March 22, 1952 at Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton and she survives. Mel worked as a General Contractor for many years. In his life, he dug basements and farmed with his father. He was a member of Labor Local # 729 of Wood river, IL. Later he was a member of Carpenters Local # 644 of St. Louis, MO. He also owner & operator of A & W Drive Thru, Main Station Convenience Store, and owner of 3 Acre Trailer Park.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Hefer (65 years) of Staunton, IL; 3 children, Pat (Bill) Gunn, Tom (Bonnie) Hefer, and Jill Denney; 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Cula Mosser & June Jascur.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 PM on Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 11 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton with Rev. Kelly Mitteis officiating. Burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Staunton. Memorials are suggested to either Zion Lutheran Church or to the Charity of the Donor’s Choice.
