Helen Johnson, 95, of Staunton, Illinois died Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at Heritage Health in Staunton. Born January 3, 1925 in Staunton, Illinois, she was a daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Chris & Daisy (Leonard) Struebig. She married Phillip Joseph Matesa and he died in 1957. She later married Harold Frank Johnson and he died June 22, 2016. She worked in the Housekeeping Department at Community Memorial Hospital in Staunton for many years. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Staunton and the Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge # 217 of Benld, Illinois.
She is survived by a son, Robert “Bob” (Cheryl) Matesa of Benld, IL, 4 grandchildren, Chad (Julie) Matesa of Staunton, IL, Joey Matesa of Staunton, IL, Cary (Jason) Foulk of Staunton, IL, and Jennifer Mills of Quincy, IL, 11 great grandchildren, Janie Milkovich, Michael Matesa, Olivia Matesa, Isabella Foulk, Jacob Foulk, Nick Rekart, Noah Rekart, Jacob Mills, Phillip Mills, Aaron Mills, and Kellem Mills, 1 great great grandchild, Carson Milkovich. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Besides her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Phyllis Hawley, 3 brothers, Eugene Struebig, Fred Struebig, David Struebig.
There will be no visitation due to COVID-19 protocol. Private funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton with Pastor Kelly Mitteis officiating. Burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Staunton. Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church of Staunton.
