Gary D. Smith

Gary D. Smith, 67, of Staunton, IL, passed away on Monday, February 2, 2026 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL.  He was born February 22, 1958 in Staunton, IL, the son of the late Delmar Clark Smith & Ida Lena Mary (Mehlberg) Smith Hutchins & Edward Alvin Hutchins.

Gary attended Staunton schools & graduated from Mt. Olive High School in 1977.  As an adult, Gary worked as part of the Maintenance Department at Holiday Shores & part-time for Illinois Valley Economic Development Corporation helping to maintain the Coalfield Rest Stop on I-55.  He also worked for many years making Easter grass at Highland Supply, but Gary's favorite past time was working with his twin brother Larry in his vegetable garden.

He is survived by his twin brother -  Larry Smith;  his sister -  Sharon (Frank) Schwab;  two sisters-in-law -  Angela Smith  &  Rena Smith;  many nieces & nephews;  & his longtime girlfriend -  Patricia Rackley.  Besides his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his siblings -  Shirley (Smith) Boston,  Kenneth Smith,  Barbara Smith (in infancy),  Robert Smith,  Edward Smith,  Donna (Smith) Briggs Julian,  &  Dennis Smith.

No funeral service is scheduled.  A "Celebration of Life" will be announced at a later date.
