Chesney E. “Ernie” Phipps, 91 of Staunton, IL passed away Thursday, December 3, 2020 at Heritage Health in Staunton, IL. Born October 27, 1929 in Salem, IN, he was a son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Ernest & Melissa (Matthew) Phipps. He married Wanda Faye Miller on February 1, 1948 and she passed away on May 26, 2019. Ernie served in the U.S. Army from 1946 – 1949. He worked at Sinclair Oil in St. Louis, MO and later worked as a Laborer for Laborers Local of East St. Louis. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Staunton, Staunton VFW Post #1241, Staunton American Legion Post # 362, Staunton Masonic Lodge # 177 AF & AM. He was an avid fisherman and loved his St. Louis Cardinals.
He is survived by 1 Daughter-In-Law, Gloria Phipps of East Alton, Illinois, 5 Grandchildren, Brian Phipps of Girard, Illinois, Patrick (Rochelle) Phipps of Springfield, Illinois, Kevin Phipps of East Alton, Illinois, Shelly (Billy) Murray of Brighton, Illinois, Chris Vesper of Staunton, Illinois, 7 Great Grandchildren, Thomas & Wyatt Phipps, Zachary & Robin Phipps, Tanner Tucker, Mason Murray, & Eli Vesper, 1 Great Grandchild, Mila Phipps. Several Nieces & Nephews also survive.
Besides his wife & parents, he was preceded in death by 1 Son, Richard Phipps, 1 Daughter, Donna Vesper, 3 Sisters, Edith, Maude, & Dorothy, and 1 Brother Robert.
Visitation will be from 10 AM to 11 AM on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton. Private services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Staunton with Rev. Kelly Mitteis officiating. Burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Staunton. Memorials are suggested to either St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to Zion Lutheran Church of Staunton.
