Margaret Josephine “Marge” or Maggie” Urekar, 95 of Staunton passed away Thursday, September 27, 2018 at Eunice Smith Home in Alton, IL. Born April 21, 1923 in Godfrey, IL, she was a daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. John Veltjes. She married Leo Tosolin on September 25, 1948 and he passed away in 1951. She then married John A. Urekar on February 9, 1957 in Mt. Olive, IL and passed away on July 7, 2010. She earned a Registered Nursing Degree at the end of World War II as a working resident/student at Jewish Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, MO. She began her career at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield. After raising her family, she returned to work in the 1980’s as a Supervising Night Nurse at Heritage Health in Staunton. Marge was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church of Staunton. In addition, she was a Volunteer for Meals for Wheels for many years. She enjoyed baking ( and was known for her Christmas Cookie platters), gardening, quilting with the Ladies at St. Michael’s, and was devoted to her Shellie’s & Collies. She was a past Troop Leader for Brownies/ Girl Scouts and was past Secretary & Treasurer for the Staunton Band Parents for 8 years.
She is survived by 3 Children, Kathy Tosolini of Saddlebrook, MO; John (Sheryl) Urekar of Millstadt, IL; and Richard (Andrea) Shaffer of Decatur, IL; 4 Grandchildren, Christina & David Urekar both of St. Louis, MO; Evan & Baylee Shaffer both of Decatur, IL. Besides her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by 1 Sister, Catherine Hickerson; 3 Brothers, Lewis, Christian, and Frederic.
Margaret is donating her body to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. No services are scheduled. Memorials are suggested to either Guiding Eyes for the Blind (guiding eyes.org); Staunton Education Foundation; or to Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).
