James E. Harmer, 82 of Staunton, Illinois passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at Friendship Village in Sunset Hills, Missouri. Born November 24, 1935 in Litchfield, Illinois, he was a son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Edgar Harmer. He married Betty Dennis on February 25, 1956 in Oxford, England and she survives. He was the owner/operator of Modern Cleaners in Staunton, Illinois for 36 years. James served in the U.S. Air Force. In addition, he was the Civil Defense Director in Staunton for many years. He was a member of the Staunton Volunteer Fire Department, a past member of the Staunton Jaycees, a lifetime member of the Macoupin County Amateur Radio Club (ARC).

He is survived by his wife, Betty Harmer of Staunton, IL; 1 daughter, Sandra K. (Steve) Hribernik of Sunset Hills, MO; 1 son, James D. (Jean) Harmer of St. Charles, MO; 3 grandchildren, Erin E. Hribernik of Los Angeles, CA; Nicole K. Harmer of St. Charles, MO; and Christopher J. Harmer of St. Charles, MO. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 1 grandson, Steven Hribernik and 1 brother, Jerry Harmer.

Private services were held on Monday, January 15, 2018 at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton with Rev. George Radosevich officiating. Burial was held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Staunton. Memorials are suggested to either the American Diabetes Association or to the American Cancer Society.
