Gene V. Knapp, 89 of Staunton, Illinois passed away Sunday, January 28, 2018 at Hillsboro Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Hillsboro, Illinois. Born April 25, 1928 in Granite City, Illinois, he was a son of the Late Mr. & Mrs. Arthur & Ruth (George) Knapp. He married Norma Moye on August 15, 1965 in Ridgway, Illinois and she survives. He worked as a nurse at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri for many years. Gene served in the U.S. Navy from September of 1950 thru July of 1954. He was a member of the Cross Church of Staunton, Illinois. Gene had a passion for knowledge, studying the bible and sharing his faith. He also enjoyed playing the organ and collecting model trains.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Knapp of Staunton, IL; 3 daughters, Rachael (Jim) Boone of Chatham, IL; Petrina Knapp of San Diego, CA; and Monica (George) Ortega of Springfield, IL; 1 son, Peter Knapp of Denver, CO; 11 grandchildren, Lauren Boone, Brock Boone, Heather (Justin) Wendling, Matthew Berry, Katherine Cloud, Luke Cloud, Kaitlyn (Ben) Beckwith, Nicholas Wyatt, Madolyn Wyatt, Landon Ortega, Jocelyn Ortega; 3 great grandchildren, Odin McCloud, Kolten Wendling, and Kevin Beckwith; 1 brother, Bill (Rella) Knapp of Granite City, IL; 1 step-brother, Kenny (Carol) Crick of Granite City, IL. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Carolyn Janete Knapp; 5 siblings, Marie Stein, Arthur Knapp, Virgil Knapp, Dan Knapp, and Carolyn Knapp.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 AM on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton. Funeral services will follow at 11 AM at Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton with Rev. Don Moye officiating. Burial will be held at Mt. Olive City Cemetery in Mt. Olive, IL. Graveside Military Rites will be conducted by the Staunton Military Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to either Carmi Baptist Children’s Home in Carmi, IL or to Angel Cove in Mt. Vernon, IL.
